Successful writers tell us: read, read, read. Read writers whose work you respect. Read up-and-coming writers, read the classics, read pulp fiction, read biography, read the works of your writer friends.
At the inspiring Lee County Library Reading Festival this March, I purchased every book by every author under our Gulf Coast Writers tent. It was not only a desire to expand my library, it was also a commitment to my fellow writers. If we are to know and help each other, we must read each other’s writings.
That’s one reason we’re so pleased with the work Sheryl and Cheryl Lynn are doing to publish our monthly GCWA Gazette. They are giving us a glimpse into the work our fellow members are doing. Curt is describing the cultures and values of the peoples of Southeast Asia. Laura is spattering blood over the ice at a skating rink. These little snapshots make us want to read more.
And this week, we’re getting into the brain of fellow GCWA member and prolific author Judy Pearson. Her book The Wolves at the Door takes us into World War II spycraft and the American woman who became the greatest female espionage operative of all time. Judy’s presentation this Saturday July 20 will explore how meticulous research make credible this and her other works of nonfiction.
I’ve been reading The Wolves at the Door and the wonderfully varied works of our GCWA talent pool. I hope you’ll do the same.
We’re moving, you know. Next month, on August 17, we’ll see you at the Fairfield Inn, 7090 Cypress Terrace. We have a cozy meeting room there, just right for a group of no more than three dozen. So come early to get a seat. If you would like to attend via zoom please email Christie at executive@gulfwriters.org and she will email you the link.
Our September meeting is the awards celebration. Winners of our GCWA writing contest will receive their prizes and read from their winning entries. This is another opportunity to see the talents of our members.
I’m so glad to be getting to know you. You’re all fascinating. Tell me more.
